We Hear: Turbocharged Fourth-Gen Mazda MX-5 Miata Possible - Motor Trend

For starters, Nobuhiro Yamamoto, program manager for the new car, said during the Goodwood Festival of Speed last month there wouldn’t be a turbocharged version of the ND Miata. Meanwhile, Kudo Hidetoshi, Mazda’s global PR boss, said during a Spanish MX-5 press event that, “A turbocharged or MPS variant is one of the options we will definitely consider. ” Where the new Miata will be available with either 1. 5-iiter or 2. 0-liter four-cylinder engines in most global markets, only the 2. 0-liter engine will be offered in the U. S. Still Yamamoto still prefers naturally aspirated engines to forced... If you think about all those elements you may think a turbo is not a good idea. Given the slew of 2 liter 200 hp engines that have existed without forced induction, is say it is possible but noone can argue about the fuel economy of turbocharged engines. Bmw does a great job with engine response in turbo engines. My guess would be that mazda with shoehorn the 2. 5 liter from the mazda 3 that produces 180 hp (not sure about that number correct me if im wrong) and tune it to a bit over 200hp. The MX-5 Miata is The Who of roadsters. It changed everything for small sports cars when first introduced in 1990. During its first three generations, the MX-5 Miata would inspire a swarm of imitators that have never quite lived up to the real thing. For 2016 there is a new, fourth generation of the MX-5 Miata and it appears Mazda may have created the brand’s own Tommy- like masterpiece. Get the Flash Player to see this player. So if you actually tested with a Soft Top NC 6 speed (not the NC 5 speed which has different trans ratio’s than the 6 speed with LSD) the NC would have been much closer to ND 6 speed. Something just did not look right when the heavy PRHT was level with ND and it looked as if the NC driver almost stopped, anyway I guess the ND Skyactiv Mazda Engine with it’s direct fuel injection make the difference as the Ford designed NC... Don’t get me wrong, the ND is great, it uses the same suspension design as the NC, but until the ND Manual Retractable Hardtop is released in a few years, you wont see many PRHT owners dropping back to a soft top. Some say that the ND’s really competitor are just the Miata’s that went before. Sad to hear that the ND steering is not as sharp as the NC’s, otherwise it sounds like the ND was a clean sweep (of the important stuff anyway, who cares about a glove box). At the amateur level Miatas make great parking lot auto-cross racers, and at the professional level, the Battery Tender Miata MX-5 Cup pits some of the country’s best road-racers against one another on the country’s best racetracks. The all-new 2016 MX-5 Miata Cup car was revealed recently at, where else, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. John Doonan, director of motorsports for Mazda North American Operations, commented on the new Cup racer, saying, “For Mazda, this weekend is the perfect blend of past, present, and future. We are showcasing our current line-up of race-inspired products in our consumer display in the paddock, and with this pace car, we are giving a glimpse into the 2016 racing season when the latest MX-5 Miata will be racing in the Global MX-5 Cup. The new, 2016 season featuring the new cars starts after the first of the year. The new cars will have a slightly better power to weight ratio despite the new cars’ 155hp engine, down from 167 hp in the outgoing car. Source: www.torquenews.com
