  2006 Lincoln Mark LT - First Look - Motor Trend Not bad--for just swapping badges and plastic

  

  So it's finally come to this: One of America's great luxury marques, once the preferred transport of presidents and plutocrats, is now basically a trim level on an F-150 pickup truck. That low rumbling sound you hear is Henry Leland turning over in his grave.

  Leland is one of the forgotten pioneers of the American auto industry. A perfectionist engineer who made a name for himself building the single-cylinder engine that powered Oldsmobiles in the early 1900s, Leland was instrumental in the founding of Cadillac, which he sold to GM in 1917, and in 1920 launched a new high-quality car named after a lifelong hero, the man for whom he'd voted: Abraham Lincoln. Leland's timing was bad, however: His upscale Lincolns were launched just as the post-World War I recession started to bite, and within months the company was in financial trouble. Henry Ford snapped up Lincoln in a bankruptcy sale. Leland would hate the new Lincoln Mark LT. All the "Lincoln-ness"--that big chrome waterfall grille, the taillights, the badges, the alloy wheels, the wood and leather interior--has simply been screwed, glued, or sewn onto a regular F-150 crew cab. Modern automotive brand management doesn't get much more cynical than this: Even the Ford-based Lincoln Navigator and Aviator SUVs at least get some unique sheetmetal. That said, it'll probably sell a bunch. Ford insiders hint the Mark LT is a stopgap product designed to keep agitated Lincoln-Mercury dealers in truck-friendly states happy. Meantime, they say they wouldn't be disappointed if 13,000 Mark LTs were sold in a full year, and if sales reached 20,000, they'd be ecstatic. You can understand why when you consider the base price for a two-wheel-drive Mark LT is $40,050, or almost 10 percent more than the sticker for a top-of-the-range F-150 King Ranch crew cab. Make no mistake, the Mark LT works well as a truck. Our fully loaded 4WD tester (nearly $46,000 worth) proved quiet and smooth riding around town, just like, er...an F-150. The 300-horsepower, 5.4-liter V-8 could use midrange punch, however, and the lazy four-speed automatic needs waking up--the transmission's reluctance to kick down means rolling acceleration at freeway speeds is surprisingly leisurely. You need to plan passing moves with care on two-lane roads. The cabin's a comfy place, enhanced by the Lincoln-grade leathers stitched onto the steering wheel, shifter, and seats. Our beige metallic tester was trimmed with soft, camel-colored Nudo leather that looked wonderful against the ebony wood accents and chrome highlights, but showed every single mark. This ain't really a working truck, although, unlike the Blackwood, you can actually carry stuff (up to 1620 pounds worth, in fact) in the pickup bed and tow up to 8900 pounds. Standard equipment is, as you'd expect, lavish. Lincoln-Mercury has kept the options list tight, offering only 12 extras, including a choice of wheels, chrome rail bars for the pickup bed, and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. Yeah, it's lux.   Astute consumers will note that the Lincoln Mark LT is actually the company's second attempt at building a luxury pickup truck. The similarly sized Blackwood predecessor had a few unique and interesting features, but was criticized for being both overpriced and impractical. Moreover, many felt the cabin did not live up to its luxurious nameplate. So Lincoln went back to the drawing board and the resulting Mark LT is more practical and stylish. Though obviously closely related to the crew-cab version of the Ford F-150 full-size pickup, Lincoln's version had a more contemporary and upscale interior and unique exterior styling cues.

  As a competitor in the luxury truck segment, the Lincoln Mark LT pickup offered the benefits of an upscale look, a roomy cabin, a choice of a 5.5-foot bed or 6.5-foot bed, and smooth power and ride qualities. Full-size pickup truck shoppers just wanting something a bit different from a commonplace pickup probably drove away from a Lincoln dealership satisfied even though the Mark LT didn't offer anything really significant beyond what was available on the F-150. It was mostly cosmetic upgrades like a chrome Lincoln grille, special taillights and Lincoln badging.

  The LT's final year was 2008. In its place, Ford introduced the F-150 Platinum, the highest trim level offered in the model lineup.

  Most Recent Lincoln Mark LT

  The Lincoln Mark LT was available only as a full-size crew-cab truck in two sizes: a standard-wheelbase model with 5.5-foot bed or a longer-wheelbase version with a 6.5-foot bed. Compared to its down-market Ford cousin, the Lincoln differed mainly in its styling. There was only one trim level available -- standard features included leather seating, wood trim, heated front seats, keyless entry and a premium MP3/CD audio system (with satellite radio added for '08). Options included rear-seat DVD entertainment, a navigation system, a rearview camera (added for '08), a power rear window and chromed 18-inch wheels, bed-rail caps and running boards.

  Behind the Mark LT's signature Lincoln grille was a 5.4-liter V8 making 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque; the only transmission was a four-speed automatic. Depending on your traction requirements, two- and four-wheel-drive variants were available. The Mark LT's roomy cabin seated five and, although luxurious, it was not substantially different from its fully dressed Ford cousin. The leather seats were comfortable and had contrasting colored piping, while the gauges were chrome-trimmed and incorporated the Lincoln logo. To lend an upscale look to the cabin, Lincoln designers dressed up the dash with faux wood trim and leather; the trim on the dash, steering wheel and shifter was especially nice, as the exposed stitching added an extra element of refinement.

  On the road, the Lincoln's V8 lacked the low-end grunt of the V8 engines in the Escalade EXT, Dodge Ram and Toyota Tundra, but almost made up for that with its smooth, quiet power delivery. Suspension tuning was on the soft side, resulting in a smooth and comfortable highway ride, but handling was not exactly nimble. Brake pedal feel was only so-so as well, though the Lincoln Mark LT stopped acceptably short for a vehicle that weighed nearly 3 tons loaded.

  Past Lincoln Mark LT models

  Lincoln introduced the Mark LT luxury pickup for the 2006 model year. A few changes came in 2007, as a navigation system, 20-inch chrome wheels and power-folding mirrors were added to the options list. The 6.5-foot cargo bed option was also new this year; all '06 Lincoln Mark LTs had a 5.5-foot bed.

  Unwilling to watch Cadillac's Escalade EXT go unchallenged, Lincoln offers a luxury pickup of its own. Based on the popular Ford F-150, the 2008 Lincoln Mark LT combines the plush interior of a Lincoln sedan with a versatile pickup bed perfect for hauling jet skis, ATVs or a new 50-inch flat-screen TV. Available only in a SuperCrew Cab configuration, the Mark LT features a long list of standard luxury amenities and offers the option of four-wheel drive. Whether the Lincoln name carries enough clout to justify the extra cost over a loaded King Ranch or Harley-Davidson Ford F-150 is yet to be seen, but in a country where status is sometimes everything, the Mark LT should find enough buyers to keep the production line up and running.

  "I have had the '07 for 6 years. It has been a workhorse now with 147,000 miles. I work as an agronomist and am in and out of the fields all the time and haul my big Honda 700 4-wheeler everywhere I go. With the Mark LT, I ride in comfort and style. I haven't had it in the shop for anything but maintenance and tires. Its time for an upgrade but I just can't bring myself to let this one go."

  "I bought the truck used with only 4000 miles on it. I have had it for 2 years now. It never breaks and has needed only normal maintenance. Tows my boat easily. Everybody asks about it when they see it. As comfortable as a luxury car on the highway."

  "After having my Mark LT for more than a year I can honestly say is the best truck I've ever owned. Great looks, spacious cabin and elegant interior gives all the bang for the buck, not to mention the awesome feeling of knowing that It turns heads everywhere I go. The 20" wheels are the perfect size to go, not too big, not too small. Fellow riders don't use the overhead compartment too much as it wears out, small detail I'm willing to overlook. And don't lend it to your brothers too much, they tend to fall in love with it and start coming up with reasons to borrow! It's a powerful truck, Ford at it's finest, which makes you forget it's a Lincoln and try to put it to the test, so be ready to clean it every once in a while. I personally liked the 6 and 1/2 bed which fits an entire bedroom set (if you ever have the need!). I'm usually on the highway and it gives great mileage for its size, I'm no expert but I can add my gas dollar$. It goes without saying though that it is a big truck; therefore adjust your budget accordingly, if you're into these sorts of things. Awesome surround sound and great control gives me all the bells and whistles of a luxury experience that I have become too accustomed as a Lincoln devotee."

  The Lincoln Mark LT was a luxury-trimmed version of the Ford F-150 pickup truck. A part of the Lincoln lineup in the U.S. from the 2006 to 2008 model years, the Mark LT was a successor to the ill-fated Lincoln Blackwood, the brand's first attempt at a high-falutin' pickup.

  The full-size truck was new for the 2004 model year, and was offered in crew-cab form, with a 5.5-foot bed in its launch year. For the 2007 model year, it added the option of a 6.5-foot cargo bed.

  The Mark LT's sole powertrain teamed a 5.4-liter V-8 engine with 300 horsepower to a four-speed automatic transmission, which made possible a maximum rated towing capacity of 8,900 pounds. Throughout its three-year lifespan, the Mark LT's gas mileage was rated by the EPA as low as 12/16 mpg. Despite its V-8 engine, the Mark LT's performance wasn't brisk, only acceptable.

  Available with either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, the Mark LT rode on a suspension that was softened up compared to that in the F-150, to provide a more Lincoln-like ride. The suspension design, though, was common with the Ford, with a double-wishbone front suspension and a Hotchkiss rear end.

  For passenger comfort and cargo storage, the Mark LT was as useful as the similar F-150. With four full doors, front captain's chairs, and a three-passenger rear bench, it had good room and support for five adults. With a high-end payload rating of 1,460 pounds, the Lincoln Mark LT could carry a lot more than the Blackwood, though the short bed limited its ultimate utility.

  Inside, the Lincoln Mark LT was markedly different from the stock F-Series, with ebony-wood accents, leather seats, unique instruments, and pleasant textures all around. Add in a great audio system and the optional rear-seat entertainment system, and the LT could double for a private screening room. Eventually, all Mark LTs offered standard Sirius Satellite Radio; options included a rearview camera, a remote start system, and a Monochrome Appearance Package with a body-color grille surround, body-color bumpers, and 20-inch, seven-spoke chromed wheels.

  Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution were standard, but the Mark LT lacked stability control, side and curtain airbags. Still, in the ratings system of the day, the NHTSA gave it five stars for front crash performance and four stars for rollover.

  Lincoln never sold many Mark LT pickups, and from the moment it went on sale, it was heavily discounted. After just three model years, Ford set out on a major downsizing of its vehicle lineup--and the Mark LT was among the victims, discontinued after the 2008 model year.
