This week we had the opportunity to test drive the flagship of the Lexus lineup in the LS460. Through the past few years of economic turmoil, and as things have improved, having a vehicle such as the LS460 was more about making a statement as... One of the first things we noticed right off the bat with the Lexus LS was a starting price of $15,000 to $20,000 less than any of the competition. The 2014 LS had a complete overhaul just over 18 months ago and the redesign was like unto many of the other models in the Lexus line-up. We agreed that the changes have really been for the better, it ads a manly definition to their vehicles with the ‘spindle grill’ as the folks at Lexus genuinely refer to it, and the way that this grill is used as a definition point to define the... The engineers at Lexus over the past couple of years have really put and emphasis on designing cars for today’s demanding consumers, and the new LS series is something to behold let alone drive. 2015 LEXUS LS 460. By Steve Purdy. This is my second recent experience with Lexus’ flagship LS460 big sedan. The first was the long-wheelbase hybrid version last summer at the Lake Bluff Concours d’Elegance where I used it to shuttle collector car owners from the lot where they had to park their trailers to the show field a few miles away. That LS600hL has gas-electric hybrid powertrain and a limousine-style rear seat that would please the most persnickety potentate. This week’s regular-size LS460, fortunately, has the all-wheel drive option, a smaller but still generous rear seat and the non-hybrid powertrain that make it a much different car. The LS’ classy but conservative exterior design does not call attention to itself, but a good look at its style and size will tell you that it is something special. Lexus’ traditional spindle grille dominates the front view. The indistinct but attractive rear view looks as graceful and understated as the rest of the car with no harsh or crisp lines. A chrome accent strip across the lower door surface adds to the massive, high-wasted look of the car. The LS460 claims an amazing 0. 26 coefficient of drag, a race car-like number, which means it slips though the air much better than most and is actually more sleek than it looks. Although the big Lexus comes with plenty of power – a 386-horsepower, 4. 6-liter V8 – driving is plush and easy like traditional American favorites. The Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series cost a few thousand more than Lexus' $73,065 base, while Mercedes S-Class closes in on 100K. You won't find a more comfortable ride than the Lexus, though unless you move into Bentley and Rolls-Royce range. The LS line also includes an all-wheel-drive option (add $2,945), a long wheelbase version with even more interior space (add $6,300) and a long-wheelbase hybrid (add a whopping $47,920). An F Sport package tightens up handling, but it's still... The LS made its debut back in 1989, the latest redesign just two years ago, and Lexus continues to up the ante with the newest safety systems and luxury features. For 2015, the LS gets Lexus an upgraded multimedia system, which in other models has largely calmed what used to be a wiggly-squiggly, imprecise selector mouse. In addition you now can opt for the Crafted Line, which features and ultra white exterior with black door handles, side mirrors and grille, two-tone interior and, if you choose, luggage to match.
