My recent test vehicle is the 2015 Lexus GS 450h hybrid. This article will explore how each comes to the green car designation and examine which is a greener car choice. Performance, Cost, Design, and Reliability – BME 535d vs. Lexus GS 450h. Before we go too far, let’s get one thing straight. This Lexus GS 450h is just as fast off the line as the “torquey” BMW 553d. I examined a variety of independent reviews , and both of these vehicles accelerate to 60 mph in about 5. 7 seconds. The BMW 535d employs many of the same fuel-saving measures that gasoline hybrids do. The BMW uses an 8-speed ZF transmission tuned for fuel efficiency with many more gears than would have been considered sane a few years back. It has the stop-start function first pioneered on hybrids, and its tires, alternator, steering system, and other components all have changed to be the most fuel efficient they can be. If, in your mind, you see the BMW 535d as an old-school... In our youth-obsessed culture, however, that sort of brand identity does not sell cars, so Lexus set out to change its image in the only way possible: changing its products. Which is why the front of the 2013 Lexus GS 450h looks like the spiky hair of a Japanime character. Despite being a hybrid, often code for slow and wallowy, the GS 450h takes off with the force of a charging rhino and hammers on corners like a swordsmith crafting a katana. Making all this possible is a 3. 5-liter V-6 engine using Lexus' unique combination of port and direct injection, aided by an electric drive system. Possibly Lexus could pull more power out of it, but that might adversely affect fuel economy. The electric drive system is a bit more complex, using two motor-generators producing 180 horsepower and 200 horsepower. Rather than add up power numbers, Toyota cites an honest-sounding 338 horsepower for total system output, and does not give a total torque figure. When I put the pedal down, the car shimmied a little, the traction control light flashed repeatedly in the instrument cluster, and then the car got down to the business of plowing up the road with a force that felt unstoppable even as it sailed... Lexus has made a lot of changes to the GS for 2013, the goal being to create a more involving (read: less. traditionally Lexus) car. While we could have chosen a GS350 with the F Sport package and unassisted V-6—the most enthusiast-oriented GS on offer—we. instead went with the gas-electric model, thinking that if Lexus can make a hybrid that doesn't put an eager driver to sleep, it's really turned a corner. (Also, now that the V-8 GS has been discontinued, the hybrid is the most. powerful version of the car. While the hybrid GS's powertrain carries on largely unchanged, its chassis now works much better. The 450h's surprisingly lively chassis and ample power make for a somewhat engaging car that you're occasionally inclined to lean on. But only. The GS still seems best suited for straight-shot highway use, and there's a spooky disconnect when the tires reach their limits and stability. In other words, it's still an old-school Lexus. Our car's blonde bamboo trim and butterscotch leather are pretty, but more important, the design is modern, stylish, and warm. for Lexus, the equivalent of BMW or Mercedes-Benz building a car with zebra-print seats and a velvet headliner.
