Our perfect power train combines high performance with excellent fuel economy, an ideal that the 2009 Lexus GS 450h comes the closest of any car we've seen to delivering. As much as BMW or Mercedes-Benz might tweak conventional internal combustion engines to achieve similar numbers, the GS 450h gains its lead through its hybrid gas-electric power train. The first thing we noticed when the 2009 Lexus GS 450h appeared in our garage was that the cabin tech hadn't been updated from the initial GS model launch in 2005. Lexus had a really good navigation and stereo system back then, but times have... Having gotten used to seeing traffic flow information, thereby knowing which routes to avoid, we felt a little blind rolling out in the GS 450h. Likewise, audio sources are limited in the GS 450h, even with the upgraded Mark Levinson audio system. Typical of Lexus hybrids, pushing the start button (the smart key sitting untouched in our pocket) produced lights on the instrument cluster but no sound from the engine. The GS 450h's cabin is nicely sound-deadened, but not so much as to hide the roar of its 3. 5-liter V-6 engine coming to life. For now, the big GS 450h rolled out of our garage under electric power. And the last few GS hybrids I've driven have had squeaks and rattles and been beaten all to hell. This one I liked better. The car drove well. This is a deceptively fast car and the power comes on in a smooth and seamless whoosh. Not to me, but to some green-adopter types it might be. The car is pretty complicated, and I doubt even at that price Toyota makes much money on it, if at all. A standard GS starts at about $13,000 cheaper, and while I didn't need to fill it, the onboard mpg computer said I got about 20 mpg. SENIOR EDITOR FOR NEWS BOB GRITZINGER: If this is what it takes to get an EPA combined 23 mpg and sports-sedan levels of thrust, I'll pass. Yes, this hybrid GS does offer strong power, but the shortcomings aren't worth it. What shortcomings. I've complained in the past about the “pulsing” drivetrain feel in hybrids--sort of an on-off-on feeling--but it is more pronounced in this car than in any hybrid I've ever driven. In 1976, country bard Tom T. Hall summarized the fundamental needs of men advancing into what is politely called middle age. The song was "Faster Horses," and Hall's refrain boiled life down to the four essentials of the slightly older guy:. "It's faster horses,. The contestants in this comparison seem the equivalent of the faster horses in Hall's hedonistic lament. In this context, we're talking faster than the rest of the herd, or at least most of it. The guys who pop for rides such as these aren't necessarily interested in going faster down twisty lanes less traveled. High lateral g and brisk transient response are all very well, but what really matters is a herd of thoroughbred ponies — faster ponies — under the hood of an upscale sedan that looks like an upscale sedan. None of that Benz S-class or BMW 7-series stuff, rides that make the stockholders nervous. Just a little hedonism — with enough juice under that right-foot faucet to make it interesting. We found four horses that seem to answer this set of needs very well. They're not sports sedans in the sense of the real tigers in this size class: the BMW M5, the Mercedes E63 AMG. And three of them really are faster. The BMW 550i, for example, got a new and more potent 4. 8-liter V-8 for 2006.
