The fact that the local importer won't say how many of the new Evoque-based Land Rover Discovery Sports they expect to sell here speaks volumes. For the new model that replaces Freelander is almost as sassy as Evoque, is bigger on the inside and costs no more than the smallest Range Rover. And for those wondering, it continues that age-old Land Rover theme of being just as competent off road – thanks to its locking centre diff and permanent 4WD - as it is on. Furthermore, it received the expected five-star safety endorsement from... Prices rise significantly compared with outgoing Freelander, which it effectively replaces, the range kicks off at $78,500 and tops out at $89,500. We drove both the 140kW/420Nm SD4 and the 177kW/340Nm Si4 turbopetrol, on and off road, where both... The specs suggest a 0-100 time of 8. 9sec for the SD4 and 8. 2sec for the Si4. In which case, we'd probably go for the almost as quick diesel, especially if towing is on the agenda (a braked maxiumum of 2000kg is possible) or plenty of rural use... Both motors are barely working at 100kmh, registering just 1500rpm in ninth gear, so combined fuel use figures in the low sixes (diesels) and 8. 3 for the petrol aren't surprising. The launch of the Land Rover Discovery Sport as a replacement for the Freelander has left a number of prospective Range Rover Evoke buyers in a bit of a quandary. Do they stick to their guns and go for the more streamlined and trendy Range Rover or do they go for the chunky , more spacious Discovery Sport. It wasn’t such a hard decision when the aging Freelander was still being produced but its replacement is a good looking and very capable car, reflecting the design of the full sized Discovery but in a smaller package. In fact it’s 10 inches longer than the Evoke and that additional length allows it to have two extra seats in the luggage area which fold flat into the floor when not in use. And the fact that the middle row of seats will slide backwards and forwards to give either more legroom or more luggage space also means even adults can sit in the fold-up seats in comfort. There’s full leather upholstery and a leather covered dashboard, the ten-way adjustable front seats can be cooled or heated, the middle row seats can also be heated as can the steering wheel and windscreen and for good measure there’s a panoramic... You also have to go for the higher-powered motor if you want seven seats, because this entry-level model has five seats only, but you do get lower C02 emissions (129g/km to 139g/km in the 178bhp version), and it costs £1700 less to buy. The badge is Land Rover’s (slightly misleading) way of denoting its efficiency champions, which can also be identified by the blue ‘Sport’ badge. What’s the 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport 150 TD4 E-Capability like to drive. The engine picks up smoothly from low revs and feels responsive enough through a broad rev range for easy progress in fast traffic.
