2007-12 Jeep Wrangler & 2013 Dodge Dart Investigated For Faulty Airbags, Brakes - The Car Connection

The first vehicle under NHTSA's microscope is the 2013 Dodge Dart. NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation has received a total of 18 complaints from owners who reported that, without warning, the brake pedals in their Darts became harder to depress, and as a result, braking distance increased. "The complaints include the following information: 1) several drivers report hearing a pop noise or an air hissing noise when applying the brake pedal, followed by a hard pedal feel and reduced brake effectiveness. If a recall is requested by NHTSA, it could affect up to 121,000 vehicles in the U. S. NHTSA's second investigation is focused on the 2007-2012 Jeep Wrangler. To date, the ODI has received 221 complaints about the airbags on those vehicles -- specifically, the driver-side airbags. Interestingly, NHTSA has already conducted an investigation of right-hand -drive Jeep Wranglers from 2007-2012 for the very same problem. That probe led to a recall of 2008-2012 model-year vehicles and extended warranty coverage for Jeeps from 2007. DENVER - A hit-and-run suspect accused of plowing into the back of a Jeep, igniting a deadly, fiery explosion early Monday has been identified by Denver police. Ricardo Gardea was driving a white Dodge Durango eastbound on West 44th Avenue when he failed to stop at a red light at Federal Boulevard and slammed into the back of a black Jeep Wrangler, causing its gas tank to explode, police said. The flames engulfed the Jeep, its driver and a passenger as it continued to roll almost two blocks before stopping, according to a police report. The out-of-control Durango careened through the intersection, hitting two westbound vehicles, and then striking a parked car and shoving it into another parked vehicle, police said. Officers arriving at the six-vehicle crash at about 6:30 a. m. learned that a witness had used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames that had engulfed the Jeep's driver and passenger. The badly burned Jeep driver was transported in critical condition to the University of Colorado Hospital, where the driver later died, the police report said. The Jeep's passenger, who suffered 2nd- and 3rd-degree burns was transported in critical condition to Denver Health Medical Center. Source: www.thedenverchannel.com
