ISUZU'S gleaming X-Runners garnered much interest on the ferry across to Moreton Island this week, even raising the eyebrows of owners of those V8 luxury offerings. The X-Runner is a limited edition D-Max dual-cab with the same exclusive 3. 0-litre TDI engine, strength and versatility with a more pronounced exterior and some value-adding extras. Demand has been extraordinary, a sign of Isuzu's growing popularity, and after the D-Max's performance on the beaches of Moreton, one of Queensland's hidden four-wheel drive gems, it is easy to see why. CHECK OUT THE ISUZU I-VENTURE CLUB. The interior of this limited edition X-Runner lacks for nothing in terms of creature comforts. At first glance the seats don't look that comfortable but they manage nicely enough with more than adequate support even when you are pushing your vehicle around off-road offerings. Excitingly most of our day in the X-Runner was spent on the sand roads and beaches of Moreton Island, a perfect measure of the Isuzu's prowess and an ideal opportunity for this group of journalists to hone theirs. But Isuzu already holds something of an advantage in the fact that it’s the only dedicated truck builder to produce its own Ute. And therein lies one of the key points of difference between the Isuzu D-Max and the recently released Holden Colorado – with which it shares its chassis and much of its interior trim. While the D-Max is powered by its own 3. 0-litre four-cylinder common-rail turbo diesel engine, generating 130kW/380Nm. the Colorado uses either a VM Motori (co-owned by General Motors and Fiat) 2. 5-litre or 2. 8-litre turbo diesel producing 132kW/470Nm, and mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Both vehicles have an identical one-tonne payload across their ranges, but the Isuzu D-Max’s 3-tonne towing capacity falls short of the Colorado’s 3. 5-tonne limit. Like most of the recently released utes in Australia, the latest generation Isuzu D-Max benefits from a major styling makeover by Ichiro Murato, who also designed the previous model D-Max. He sent the D-Max through the same wind tunnel test facility where the Japanese Bullit train was developed and conducted further enhancement in the wind tunnel of Italian styling house Pininfarina. Isuzu UTE Australia has released 300 special edition Isuzu D-MAX LE III utes to join the local lineup. The Isuzu D-MAX Limited Edition III is based on the top level LS-U D-MAX 4×4, which is the most popular variant in the Isuzu range. According to Isuzu, the 4×4 versions dominate light commercial vehicle sales in Australia, with 4×4 sales more than doubling 4×2 sales. As part of a plan to double Isuzu market share in Australia, the company wants to fulfill customer demands. Compared with the normal LS-U, the D-MAX LE III gets a flashier face with a new chrome grille, silver highlights on the lower fascia and spotlight clusters and a new chrome bonnet guard strip along the top. Other features include revised 16-inch alloy wheels with a machined face, ‘Limited Edition III’ logos placed throughout the interior and exterior, and new slimline side steps with body coloured end caps and rubbed studded surfaces. The D-MAX also comes with a new, more compact single roll over bar in the back that features a brake light high on the middle of bar for added safety, a tub liner inside the tray with tie-down hooks left in place – these normally have to be...
