The Infiniti product strategists don’t seem to think so. Check the second-gen QX56. It’s big, it raises the luxury ante, and it’s all-new. New inside, new outside, new engine, new transmission, new chassis. Well, new to the QX56, anyway. But even with shared componentry, a major makeover is a big investment and, thus, a bet that the QX can win bigger in a game where, to be kind, it hasn’t been a major player. So the QX56 continues as a body-on-frame design, but its Titan pickup foundation has been scrapped. The wheelbase is a couple inches shorter, at 121. 1, and the roof is a few inches lower, but overall length (208. 3) is up, as is width (79. 9) and mass: Our four-wheel-drive test truck weighed 6054 pounds, 364 more than the QX we tested four... The new sheetmetal has more drama and some blingish frosting à la Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. Shared with the new M56 sedan, the V-8 engine— 5. 6 liters, DOHC, 32 valves, all aluminum, direct injection, variable valve timing and intake-valve lift, 400 horsepower, 413 pound-feet of torque—and the seven-speed automatic lend smooth urgency... Gasoline prices, environmental concerns, and economic recession pulled the rug out of the luxury SUV craze, which today accounts for barely one-third as many vehicle sales as in 2005. Ben Poore, Infiniti's VP in charge of American operations, says... " On average, compared with the direct competition, today's QX56 buyer is the youngest, with the highest household income and the most vehicles in his garage. Infiniti's share of this market has been growing even with the aging current model, so Poore expects to do even better with a more stylish version that adds the latest luxury, convenience and safety features even as it gains in fuel efficiency. The Specs As Infiniti revealed at this year's New York Auto Show, the 2011 QX56 is built in Japan and shares its underpinnings with the Nissan Patrol, a large SUV not sold in the U. S. but which competes with Toyota's Land Cruiser in global markets. Poore notes that the change should reduce cross-shopping with Infiniti's mass-market sister brand and give buyers of the luxury model a unique vehicle. While many competitors opt for unit-body construction or car-based crossovers to replace their large SUVs, Infiniti stayed with body-on-frame construction to maintain the truck-like hauling capacity. " Those are the responses I got while piloting a 2011 Infiniti QX56. In a time of downsizing, high gas prices, and email signatures asking you not to print, I expected to be treated as an environmental evil while driving this large, luxury SUV. Instead, the Infiniti nameplate invited exemplary exultations. "Oooh, Infiniti, that must be nice. For its second-generation makeover, the QX56 hasn't really gone to boot camp. Standing 6. 3 feet high, 6. 7 feet wide (about an inch more than the last model), and measuring 17. 3 feet tip-to-tip, this landlocked Leviathan weighs nearly three tons. Infiniti worked to improve the Q's efficiency while adding more oomph. Engine tweaks are important if you're going to fill the 26-gallon tank ($104 at $4 per gallon) and hope to surpass the 14 mpg city rating. You're delusional if you think you could actually get 20 mpg on the highway empty (5,850 pound curb weight) or pulling a load of any sort (up to 8,500 pounds). Infiniti estimates 16 mpg combined but in my experience I found the computer to stick closer to 14 mpg in more than 400 miles of mixed mileage. Source: www.boston.com
