Brand: Aging Infiniti could use some new struts - Minneapolis Star Tribune

Q: We have a 1999 Infiniti I30 with 122,000 miles that runs well but has one issue — at highway speeds the car noticeably “jumps” or “skips” sideways slightly when going over big bumps. We have not replaced the struts or any other suspension components. The struts show no signs of leaking but two garages have suggested replacing them, given the car’s mileage. How would you suggest we diagnose it. Would new struts correct this. Is it worth spending $1,000-plus to put new struts on the car, given its age. Unless there are significantly worn or loose suspension components — ball joints, bushings or tie rods — the shocks/struts are likely worn enough to allow the tires to momentarily lose traction, causing the car to skip or jump a bit. As the wheel/tire encounters a bump, the shock/strut is tuned to resist and dampen the upward suspension travel, literally absorbing the impact. At 15-plus years and 122,000 miles, the shocks/struts on this vehicle are certainly worn enough in their damping action to warrant replacement. A quick online search pulled up KYB and Monroe strut assemblies for this vehicle priced in the $60-$100 range, not including installation, so you might be able to have all four replaced for significantly less than $1,000. Robbery 100 block of West Wieuca Road— On June 10, a man was sitting in his vehicle when three men armed with handguns took his iPhone, wallet and keys. 4500 block of Harris Trail– An Uber driver was blocked in by a dark-colored sedan as she pulled into a driveway to turn around. Two men emerged from the rear of the sedan and approached both sides of her vehicle, demanding money. The suspects took a Galaxy 6 phone and her white Volvo XC90. The victim injured her ankle as she ran across the street for help. 1000 block of Chattahoochee Avenue— On June 9, a man approached another man from behind as he was using an ATM. The robber displayed a handgun and threatened to shoot if the man at the ATM did not withdraw all of his money. ” The first robber patted the victim down, taking his wallet and blue Samsung Galaxy Note 3. Both suspects left in the victim’s grey 2010 Honda Accord. 1900 block of Monroe Drive— On June 12, a woman reported she was carjacked by four men in a white Chevy Tracker as she was parking outside a parking deck. The federal government increased Wednesday the number of vehicles recalled Tuesday for faulty airbags from nearly five million to nearly eight million. The federal government is urging the nearly 8 million people to get the airbags in their cars repaired soon because they pose a potentially deadly risk if you get in a crash. Safety advocates say so far, four people have been killed and dozens injured, including Jennifer Griffin, whose neck was slashed by shrapnel during a minor accident involving her Honda Civic. "This one is such an urgent one because a safety device actually could kill you and there's nothing worse," said Joan Claybrook, auto safety advocate. It's all part of a bigger recall involving 16 million vehicles worldwide, including Hondas, Toyotas, Nissans, Mazdas, BMWs and GM cars dating all the way back to 2002. CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR VEHICLE IS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL.
