Ford planning for new small pickup in US - FOXSports.com

Ford is making plans for a return to the small pickup truck market in the U. S. with a new version of the Ranger. The company is negotiating with the United Auto Workers about making the truck at a factory in the Detroit suburb of Wayne, Michigan, a person briefed on the matter said Wednesday. The Wayne factory, which Ford calls the Michigan Assembly Plant, employs more than 4,400 workers. The 5-million-square-foot facility now makes the Focus compact and C-Max gas-electric hybrid. Ford is expected to move those products to a lower-cost factory in Mexico in 2018, but has yet to confirm the move. Sales tumbled when bigger pickups, such as the Ford F-150, caught up in fuel economy. Ford got out of the small pickup market in the U. S. in 2011, followed by General Motors in 2012. But GM has returned to the market, selling nearly 88,000 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon models this year. The smaller trucks, which are more efficient that full-size pickups, could help GM and Ford meet government fuel economy requirements. Source: www.foxsports.com

David Ige shook up Hawaii’s energy establishment when he announced Monday he is opposed to importing liquefied natural gas as a source of electric power. Hawaii needs an electrical utility with a new business model to get the state to its goal of 100 percent electrical generation from renewable energy resources by 2045, Ige said. “We are looking for a partner in the electric utility that really embraces 100 percent renewable and, I think, more importantly, changing the business model from the traditional electric utility to what would work in a fully distributed generation... Ige, a former electrical engineer, envisions a future where the electrical utility doesn’t generate power, but only distributes it. The power will be generated from renewable sources distributed throughout the community, such as the rooftops of... The typical utility model Hawaiian Electric Co. grew up with has to retire along with the utility’s fossil fuel plants, Ige said. That partner needs to share the state’s renewable-energy vision, Ige said. It must embrace the idea that Hawaii is a test bed for renewable-energy research opportunities, help photovoltaic penetration as well as help the state get business and investment partners that will help build research and development. com, search on “peak oil documentary,” and you’ll find dozens of apocalyptic videos detailing an impending world crisis that is certain to befall us any day now. The crisis is the downside of peak oil. This is a period that defines when the world’s oil fields have provided the maximum monthly rate, leaving us an ever-decreasing flow rate. Consider: Oil apocalypse , The End of Suburbia , The End of Fossil Fuels , and my favorite: There is no tomorrow. Even in the more subtly titled Fuel, a serious commentator insists that hurricane Katrina was made by the oil industry. If you were born yesterday, these videos might be scary. The second message is that we cannot learn, we are scientific and engineering idiots, and today’s state of technology is the best anyone can do. Look closer and you’ll see many of these videos are getting long in the tooth. If you were not born yesterday, you’ll recall The Wealth of Nations or have read The Population Bomb (1968), excellent examples of end-of-days authorship. In both cases, authors Thomas Malthus and Paul Erlich, respectively, predicted exploding populations that would devour the earth’s resources and lead to mass starvation and chaos.
