Silver Line one year later: Success? - WOODTV.com

(WOOD) — Tuesday marks one year since the launch of the Silver Line, the state’s first rapid bus transit line, in metro Grand Rapids. “The Silver Line is doing very well,” Jennifer Kalczuk, a spokeswoman for The Rapid, told 24 Hour News 8 on Tuesday. We’re estimating that the year-end ridership numbers will be 675,000. ”. That number would put The Rapid on track to meet expectations set before the line’s launch. The Silver Line is a bus route that operates much like a light rail system. “(The Silver Line is) really, really nice for me,” she said. “I drive a Ford F-150, so it’s $40 for me to do unlimited rides for the month, and it was costing me $40 a week in gas, so it’s a no-brainer for me. ”. But according to figures provided by The Rapid, though Route 1 numbers are down since the launch of the Silver Line, adding the numbers for both lines together shows that ridership along the Division corridor is actually up 30 percent. “We have seen some transition from people that were riding Route 1 have now shifted to the Silver Line, but that 30 percent is all growth.
