The Berkeley County sheriff’s deputy who was shot and wounded by a masked gunman late Thursday, has been taken off a ventilator and is talking and recognizing family members, a county spokesman said Saturday. “While doctors are cautiously optimistic, Lt. Will Rogers is still considered in critical but stable condition,” the spokesman said via social media. A witness who came forward described him as a black man, between 5-feet-10 and 5-feet-11, and 150 to 170 pounds, spokesman Thom Berry said. Rogers, 54, of Summerville, was shot about 10:30 p. m. Thursday while talking to a customer outside the Exxon at U. S. Highway 52 and Cypress Gardens Road. He underwent surgery early Friday and was listed in critical condition at Medical University Hospital, Berkeley County spokesman Michael Mule said. He has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 1991 and was one of 15 people who recently ran for sheriff of the county, but he did not advance out of last month’s primary. He was with the S. C. Highway Patrol from 1984 to 1990. He served in the Marines from 1980 to 1984. “I would ask that you keep he and his family in your prayers,” Acting Sheriff Butch Henerey said. So while everyone else spends their summer days relaxing on sun-drenched beaches or lounging poolside, the coaches of the College of Charleston sailing team never take too much time away from teaching and participating in the sport they love. For the sixth time in school history, the College of Charleston won the Leonard B. Fowle Trophy , awarded annually to the best overall sailing team in the country based on finishes at national championships. The Cougars also won in 1986, ’88, ’98, ’07 and ’12. “It was a nice surprise to find out that we had won the Fowle Trophy,” head coach Ward Cromwell said. “We had some great results in the fall national championships, including Stefano Peschiera’s singlehanded nationals victory. With its sixth Fowle Trophy, College of Charleston trails only the U. S. The Michigan Court of Appeals in May ordered that Haan be resentenced because his guidelines were scored too high when he was sentenced Nov. Hicks sentenced him to between 14 months and five years in the Michigan Department of Corrections for third-degree fleeing and eluding police and third-offense driving while intoxicated. His parole ends in July 2016. Haan's minimum sentence was at the bottom end of a guideline range scored at 14 to 29 months. That range called for a sentence to state prison rather than the Muskegon County Jail, which is only possible with a sentence of one year or less. But according to the appeals court, Haan's sentencing guidelines should have been scored at one to two years. Had he been sentenced at the bottom end of that range, it would have meant a sentence to county jail. Resentencing at this stage obviously couldn't change what Haan already served, but it could have taken him off parole supervision if Hicks had decided on a bottom-of-the-guidelines sentence. Hicks on Tuesday again sentenced Haan to 14 months to five years. 11, 2013, found Haan "guilty but mentally ill" of third-degree fleeing and eluding police, resisting and obstructing police and third-offense driving while intoxicated.
