Some of the most fascinating vehicles ever put into production are performance variants of basic sedans and compact cars. Cars with no performance aspirations whatsoever, like the Mercury Grand Marquis and Volkswagen Beetle, sometimes spawn misfits equipped with turbochargers, large engines, adjustable suspensions, and big brake kits--odd things to find on cars more... When the Ford Contour debuted in 1994, it was a European-designed compact sedan which offered little more than basic transportation for the masses. Ford’s Special Vehicles Team (SVT) worked their magic on the Contour, transforming it from a bread and butter sedan into America’s (claimed) M3 competitor. To facilitate this paradigm shift, the Contour received a high-flow intake manifold, polished and ported heads, specially ground camshafts, hot pistons, a lighter flywheel, and a trick high-flow dual exhaust system. Ford added a beefier suspension, with thicker anti-roll bars and a stronger set of brakes to handle the added speed. At this point, An anemic early-90s Oldsmobile compact would seem like the least likely car to spawn a performance variant. "A lot of people have either a good car or a bad car and I have a great medium car that's on its way to becoming great if I ever get around to finishing it," Kaufman says. " Kaufman has a lot to say about cars, including his F-150 and what kind of scale he would try to rate it on, since it's still in a "transformation. You'd ask me what position is the suspension in, what position are the brakes in, what position is the motor in, so you ask a bit of a complicated question. It's not a bad vehicle, it's not a great vehicle, it's just not done. My vehicle is no longer a Ford F-150. What my vehicle is, it's some version of what I wanted. I build custom vehicles all day every day, so my vehicle is on its way to becoming custom. " When Kaufman didn't have much money but really wanted one of these trucks, he didn't think he was ever going to be able to buy one. "When we started getting a better paycheck and whenever I had enough to go buy one of these trucks used, I purchased it and it was all the money I had except for gas money until the next paycheck," he says. I bought my Alfa Romeo Spider years ago from a friend. When I saw it for the first time, a tingle went up my spine all the way to the top of my head. Pininfarina styled the all-steel unibody Spider to slip through the wind. Just like the Porsche 911 of the same era, the Alfa Romeo Spider evolved in specification as carburetors were supplanted by fuel injection and slim chrome bumpers were replaced by large rubber cushions, yet the same classic specification and shape... Each generation of the car enjoys a healthy fan base: Duetto, Veloce, Junior, Aerodinamica, Quadrifoglio, and the Series 4. My 1974 Spider Veloce 2000 is one of about 35,000.
