The Neon was cheaper than most incarnations of the Civic, Escort, and Sentra. The Chrysler DOHC 16v 2. 0L I4 made 150 horsepower even before tuners got to it. . Dodge Neon: For Neck-Tattoo-Mom who uses profanity in front of her kids at the scratch-and-dent grocery. The Neon's only logical competitor by price-point was the ubiquitous GM J-Body (Chevy Cavalier, Pontiac Sunfire, Cadillac Cimarron). The third generation Chevy Cavalier sold for about $12,500 ($19,573 in 2015). Both cars, with their highest trim engines, would make 150hp, but the Neon weighed 2,500 pounds maxed out, while the Cavalier weighed 2,800 pounds wet. The Neon was nine inches shorter than the Cavalier, while both cars had an almost equal 104 inch wheelbase. A bit of full disclosure, I’ve done time in Dodge’s SRT seats and while they look the part in my experience they are not the most comfortable nor supportive thrones out there. The rest of you however, party on. There’s no doubting that the original production Neon was a cheeky-looking little car, especially in its four-door form. The two door was a little funkier looking, but with two fewer doors and smaller body openings, it’s certainly going to have more torsional rigidity and less weight to haul around. Consider this your annual reminder that commuter culture is not the same thing as car culture – and a reminder some aren't aware of the difference. Author Marc Fisher, a senior editor according to his bio, talks to a lot of people about how car culture isn't what it used to be and how kids these days aren't interested in cars. In every generation, there has been a large amount of people – probably the majority – who view cars as mere transportation, or "mundane" in Fisher's words. What's different now, however, is that there are more alternatives for those who aren't interested in cars for anything more than getting from A to B. I agree with this for the most part. A lot of boomers have a relatively narrow definition of car culture. If the vehicle (or vehicles) you're interested in aren't from between 1953 and 1973, domestic, rear-wheel-drive, and V-8, you're not a "car guy. If you expand your definition a little wider, there are plenty of car enthusiasts out there from 10-90. I would agree "car culture" is perhaps not as pervasive a cultural phenomenon as it once was, but arguably, that's a good thing, separating the...
