Riviera, Toronado owners gather in the suburbs - Chicago Daily Herald

Buick Rivieras were the talk of the town as dozens of the swanky cruisers gathered at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles June 30 to July 3. The autos all took part in the Riviera Owners Association car club's 31st annual international meet. A total of 123 Rivieras participated, with all eight of the model's generations represented. The Toronado was essentially Oldsmobile's version of the Riviera and rode on the same platform. The Riviera was launched in 1963 as an upscale personal luxury vehicle designed to compete with such rivals as the Ford Thunderbird. Throughout it's run, the Riviera had distinct styling, most notably in the model's third generation. Riviera production stopped in 1999. Source: www.dailyherald.com

The close-up feature in last week’s photo was the side scoop on a beauty, a 1963 Buick Riviera. If you guessed 1964 Riviera, we also would have accepted your entry because the two models were basically the same. The 1965, on the other hand, gave up the fake scoops, and in front it had headlights hidden behind the grille, although we wouldn’t have expected you to see that from the scoop shot. Our clue last week was, “Just as last week’s Continental should remind us of Europe (“the Continent”) so should this week’s car’s name. ” Of course, the Riviera is a prominent vacation and leisure spot in Europe. Chosen randomly from the correct entries was the name of Rick Farris, of Augusta, who said: “This is a 1963-64 Buick Riviera. “I had a 1964 Riviera back in the early 1980s that I mechanically restored. It was painted the original W-code Diplomat Blue, had dark-blue interior and had the 425-cubic-inch ‘nail-head’ engine with the unique Super Turbine 400 transmission.
