First-Ever Winter Thru-Hike of the PCT - Outside Magazine

On a sub-zero November morning, following a month spent slogging 600 miles along wet, snowy stretches of the Pacific Crest Trail in Washington and Oregon, Shawn Forry and Justin Lichter awoke to find their trail shoes coated with ice and frozen... But the weather had turned for the worse, and through gritted teeth that morning, the men jammed their feet into their frozen shoes and prepared for yet another long, cold day on the trail. “We told ourselves that if our feet aren’t warm in an hour, we’ll stop and re-warm them,” Forry said later. A few hours into their hike that morning, the hikers pulled their feet out of their shoes and saw that they were cold, white, and waxy. Forry and Lichter had set out to do something no one else had ever done before: hike the Pacific Crest Trail in winter. The Appalachian Trail’s badass older cousin, the PCT stretches 2,650 miles from British Columbia close to the border of Mexico, and wends through the Cascade Range in Washington and the Sierra Nevada in California. Since its formation in 1977, there has been only one known attempt to hike the PCT in winter, by couple Gerald Duran and Jodi Zatchick back in 1983. 75 Years Ago: The First-Ever Youth Nationals - USA Hockey

Seventy-five years ago this week, in 1940, USA Hockey (then known as AHAUS) hosted its first-ever youth national championship. Classified as the United States Junior National Championship, it was held at the Boston Arena (now known as Matthews Arena) and featured eight teams of varying ages, many of them comprised of players in their late teens. One such team, the Boston Junior Olympics, clawed its way to the final on the strength of 18-year-old left wing Dick Rondeau and 19-year-old goaltender John Meoli, but then they ran into a grizzled Boston buzzsaw called the 97 Club. The former Harvard star captained Team USA to silver at Lake Placid in 1932, and eight years later, bested Meoli three times en route to an 8-6 win for the Boston 97 Club which made them the first-ever USA Hockey "junior" national champions. Rondeau would eventually captain Dartmouth College to 41 consecutive wins and three Ivy League championships. As a sophomore in 1942, he was named to the Boston Globe All-Pentagonal Team, inspiring one hockey observer to declare Rondeau as “possessing the qualities to develop into the nearest approach yet seen in American college hockey to the immortal... The new facilities will deploy low-cost manufacturing processes and be the first in the world designed and built from the ground up to handle Toyota’s new modular platforms. Together, the expansions will boost Toyota’s global capacity by 300,000 vehicles a year, from around 9. 8 million units. In China, Toyota will invest 52. 2 billion yen ($440 million) to add a third line to its plant in Guangzhou. The effort includes developing a new generation of platforms that will underpin half of Toyota’s lineup by 2020. It breaks the three-year “intentional pause” on greenfield sites ordered in April 2013 by President Akio Toyoda. During the moratorium, Toyota eked out more capacity from existing plants, while laying the groundwork for the new modular vehicle platform and efficient manufacturing processes. “This strategic re-thinking of how and where we build our products will create new opportunities for our company, our business partners and our team members across the region,” Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota North America, said in a statement.
