2015 Nissan Navara | first drive review - Cars Guide

Almost 80 years after building its first small truck Nissan (nee Datsun) has introduced the 12th generation of the Navara pickup, the D23 series. Launched to the world’s motoring press in Thailand, where a huge new factory to build the Navara is in the final stages of construction, the all-new new Nissan pickup is unashamedly aimed at the sports ute buyer. But don’t despair, those looking for a tough workhorse or a heavy-duty tow vehicle will also find a Navara that fits the bill. There’s some carryover from the D22 Navara in the areas of the chassis frame, but even that has been significantly modified to trim weight, about 70 kg, and add strength. Navara’s tall bonnet is fronted by a grille that follows a similar design theme to the latest passenger models, except that the centre section has been considerably widened to add to the tough, commercial vehicle look. The bonnet has the sort of sculpting that wouldn't be out of place in a sports car, definitely not the sort of shape you would have seen in a working vehicle in the past. Inside, Navara looks more car-like than pickup-positioned. New Navara body types are single-cab, extra-cab and dual-cab and all three can be ordered as bare cab-chassis for. Smoother, sexier and smarter: that sums up Nissan's first 'all new' Navara (NT300) in 10 years which will arrive in Australia early next year with a load of innovations. Comfort, performance, style and economy are at the forefront of the handsome ute, the first real newie in 10 years. Sold in single, king and dual cab, most models will break with ute tradition by having advanced five-link and coil rear suspension. And under the new sculpted bonnet with its power bulges will be an advanced new 2. 3litre turbo-diesel, replacing the 2. 5 four and 3. 0litre V6 motors of old - which won't meet Euro VI emissions standards. Prices of the new Navara will be revealed closer to arrival. The new Navara is marginally shorter and lower than before and has better aerodynamics, now 0. 37 compared to 0. 41. It's also 70kg lighter. Inside, the dash has the full monty of features with steering wheel controls for all audio and satnav functions and neat stitching gives the materials a classy and sporty look. The mainly black sculpted dash has a fair bit of metal-look finishers to brighten the place and of course there's Bluetooth and associated bits, including aux and USB sockets. Joshua Dowling road tests and reviews the new Nissan Navara at international launch in Thailand, and finds it's not as big a step forward as other recent arrivals. That’s what Nissan designers think the large bulges on the bonnet of the new tough-as-guts Navara ute resemble. I’m not sure I follow Nissan’s analogy, but it reminded me I need to go to the gym more. Nissan can probably be excused for getting a little excited about its new Navara as it’s the first all-new model in 10 years. The Navara has also been the top selling Nissan in Australia for the past nine years. Thanks to some unfortunate timing, the Nissan Navara is one of the last of the top-selling utes to get a complete makeover. The Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok reset the benchmark when they arrived three years ago. The new Nissan Navara is likely to get a five-star ANCAP safety rating thanks to the fitment of seven airbags (including one for the driver’s knee), and an all-new body over a modified version of the previous model's chassis. A five star rating would put it back on the eligibility lists for the many government departments, mining companies and big business fleets that insist on top safety scores for work vehicles. The steering has way too many turns lock to lock (3. 75 turns lock to the lock on the high-grade models and 4. 25 on lower grade models with skinny tyres), even by ute standards.
