Sonoma winner Kyle Busch must average about a 14th-place finish in the next 10 races to have a chance to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Busch seeks a Chase spot despite missing the first 11 Cup races because of a broken right leg and left foot suffered in the season-opening Xfinity race at Daytona International Speedway. Busch’s average finish in the five Cup races since his return is 20. NASCAR granted Busch a waiver on the requirement that a Chase driver must start every race. Cole Whitt is 30th in the standings with 261 points – an average of 16. 3 points per race. To tie Whitt – Busch would own the tiebreaker based on his win – Busch needs 299 points in the 10 races before the Chase field is set. A 14th-place finish is worth 30 points in a race – that does not include any bonus points for leading a lap or leading the most laps. #1 – There should be no requirement that a Chase driver must start every race to be eligible for the Chase. #3 – If a driver can miss a third of the season and still accumulate enough points to make the Chase, it indicates the points system is seriously flawed. I know it wasn’t the finish we wanted, but it was still a very memorable weekend. In his 23rd and final Sprint Cup start at Sonoma Raceway, Gordon hoped to return to his home track and win but it didn’t happen. “I was really optimistic going into the race,” Gordon said. I was pretty happy with it. ”. But as the 110-lap event played out, the original race setup Gordon and crew chief Alan Gustafson chose started to go away. Additional in-race adjustments didn’t help, and Gordon struggled. “It just seemed as the track continued to lay rubber, our setup, which we were taking a little bit of a gamble and risk with, but it looked good in practice … it just didn’t pay off for us,” Gordon said.
