Road, air disasters: 3 killed in wreck west of Laughlin - Mohave Valley News

LAUGHLIN — One person is dead and three others are in the hospital following the crash of a small plane at Big Bend State Recreation Area early Sunday evening. The crash sparked a large fire in dense underbrush at the park that continued to burn late into the night. “I was sitting on my patio just before 6 o’clock reading a book when I heard a plane go over,” said Laughlin resident Sharon Foust. Bill Foust, Sharon’s husband, saw the plane as he was seated inside the house at the couple’s kitchen table. The plane was moving from east to west, both Sharon and Bill Foust reported. Emergency crews sent to the scene of the crash located the aircraft with a pilot and three passengers inside. Three people made it out of the plane but one was trapped inside the wreckage. One of the occupants was flown by helicopter from Big Bend SRA to University Medical Center in Las Vegas. A woman was taken by ambulance to Western Arizona Regional Medical Center and later flown to UMC in Las Vegas in critical condition, reported Sarah Morga-Mangum, hospital spokeswoman. Another victim was taken by ambulance to Valley View Medical Center. He was treated in the emergency room and then flown to the UMC Burn Center in Las Vegas, said Valley View spokesman Lance Ross. Mercury begins life without Taurasi - Mohave Valley News

Mercury head coach Sandy Brondello considers Taurasi the best player in the world, and that’s hard to argue, given her track record. The seven-time All-Star has been a top player in the WNBA for more than a decade. “While disappointing, I think it’s the right thing for Diana Taurasi as a basketball player and it’ll definitely extend her career,” Brondello said. Taurasi is still under contract with the Mercury and has said she expects to return in 2016. But for the 2015 squad, the question still remains: Who will lead this team. Forward Candice Dupree, a three-time All-Star, said she is ready to step into a larger leadership role to maintain the team’s success. “I do think we’ve got a target on our back considering we won the championship last year,” she said. “I think teams are going to look to try and beat us because we are missing players. Forward DeWanna Bonner said she hopes teams let their guard down against the Mercury, viewing them as a weakened team rather than as the defending champions. Brondello has already told Dupree and Bonner that they will need to become stronger leaders for the Mercury.
