A 1975 Ford F100 deserves respect for plenty of reasons but we didn’t know this pickup truck can drift so well. The F100 was recently drifted on the Beech Ridge racetrack in Scaraborough, Maine. Sure, the event, which took place yesterday, may have been called Beech Ridge Day of Destruction, but nobody actually expected the participants to go all destruction derby. Well, the Ford driver was very close to pulling such a move, after he lost control of the truck while drifting on the outside of another contender. The latter situation led to a second near miss, with the Ford barely avoiding hitting the wall. And when you see that small wheelbase, it’s not difficult to understand why it’s so easy to lose control in this Ford. Wichita has lots of car shows each year. But one of the biggest and longest-running happens every January and fills Century II – all of Century II – with hundreds of hot rods, muscle cars and restored vintage vehicles from around the country. Here’s a list of 10 reasons you might want to check out this weekend’s 58th annual Starbird-Devlin Rod & Customs Charities Car Show, which runs Friday through Sunday. Cars, cars and more cars: This year’s show will be filled with 380 cars, many of which have traveled from a 200 mile radius and some that have come from as far away as California, Detroit and Minnesota. “You can’t hardly believe what you’re going to see until you come and see it,” said John Fry, a board member and one of the promoters of the show. The “Magnificent Seven:” The highlight of the show is the unveiling of “The Magnificent Seven,” which judges deem the best, most exciting cars that have never before been shown in Wichita. Magnificent Seven finalists often are cars that are valued in the millions. It’s all for charity: In 2011, a group called Cars for Charities Co. , made up of father and son Tom and Tim Devlin, Dick Price and brothers Carl and John Fry, bought the show from longtime owner Darryl Starbird. Ladies and gentlemen drivers, prepare to be teleported to a parallel future where global warming may have affected driving, but instead of all cars becoming SUVs, drivers simply don’t give a damn about ground clearance and all its implications. It even seems the Raging Bull is attacking the grass without its nose lift on. The rear wheels tear up the grass, the V12 sings like a maxion of destruction, all the right stuff is present. During its sideways stint, the Aventador meets an Alfa Romeo MiTo , a model whose nose feels as low as that of a supercar. All this alternative future driving seems to have taken place at Goodwood, a place that’s all too used to seeing go-fast machines doing all sorts of stuff that shouldn’t happen.
