University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute’s ( UMTRI ) Automotive Futures managing director Bruce Belzowski tracked thousands of vehicles sold at auction between 2012 and 2013, looking for gas and diesel versions of the same or... “In particular, the idea that buyers can get a return on their initial higher investment in a diesel vehicle within three years is a very positive sign considering new buyers tend to own their vehicles for an average of three-to-five years,” he said. The gas version of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class offers a fuel economy of 20 mpg. The luxury car’s diesel version improves that mileage by 30 percent with a fuel economy of 27 mpg. The E-Class is a rare case where the diesel version is cheaper (by $213) than the gas version. The MSRP of the gas E-Class is $53,855 while the diesel version is $53,642. Volkswagen Jetta. The VW Jetta’s gas version offers a fuel economy of 24 mpg, while the diesel version gets 33 mpg.
