County school bus involved in collision - Martinsville Bulletin

The Henry County Public Schools bus was traveling south on Irisburg Road, had just crossed U. S. 58 bypass, and a car came to a stop sign from eastbound U. S. 58 bypass wanting to turn left onto Irisburg Road to go north on that road. After coming to a stop at that stop sign, the car allegedly failed to yield right of way and pulled in front of the bus on Irisburg Road, Weidhaas said. The bus was traveling 30-35 miles per hour in the posted 35-mph zone and the car was traveling about 3 mph at the point of collision, Weidhaas said. He estimated damage to the bus at $8,000 to $9,000 and said the car, a 2007 Hyundai Sonata, was totaled. and the driver of the car — Cassandra Brown, 48, of Eden, N. C. , who was alone in the car — were all transported to Memorial Hospital in Martinsville with minor injuries, Weidhaas said. The accident happened about 1. 75 miles south of Martinsville on Irisburg Road, and a lane of traffic was blocked for 45 minutes after the accident. Ridgeway Rescue Squad, Henry County Public Safety, Axton Fire Department, Henry County Sheriff’s Office, personnel from Henry County Public Schools and several officers from the Virginia State Police responded, Weidhaas said.
