: There’s a sense, right from the outset, that the Tucson has been designed to be painless to live with. The Hyundai tackles urban and country roads with ease, rarely troubling its driver and passengers or causing any discomfort. That’s in part thanks to a precise, easily shifted six-speed manual gearbox, with well-spaced ratios that suit the engine’s optimum crank speeds. Carrying any speed you’ve accumulated through corners proves no major issue, either, as the Tucson packs a keen front end and impressive body control. There’s a slight initial lean into a corner, but little else, and the overall result is a composed feel. There’s little in the way of feedback through the steering, though, and the woollen feel around the dead-ahead position is a further negative, but compensation comes in the form of an otherwise precise and well-weighted feel. Some may find this Hyundai’s lack of engine and steering verve disappointing but, given the Tucson’s intended market, it’s not a huge strike against it.
