A fire at a Sudbury car dealership that destroyed more than a dozen vehicles and caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage last month was proabably the result of a mechanical malfunction in a motor vehicle, officials said Wednesday. The fire that broke out at Herb Chambers Land Rover Jaguar on Boston Post Road in the early morning hours of Sept. 22 destroyed 19 vehicles, including Jaguars, Range Rovers, Land Rovers, and Jeeps, causing up to $750,000 in damage, according to a press release from the state Department of Fire Services. Shortly after the fire, investigators determined that the blaze originated in a 2004 Jaguar XJ8, which was undergoing repairs from a previous fire that occurred elsewhere, fire services said. “Whether the dealership fire was caused by the original mechanical malfunction that the mechanics working on the car [where the fire originated] had not yet identified, or another electrical or mechanical failure, cannot be determined,” according...
