East/West baseball enjoys breakthrough season - Green Bay Press Gazette

The Green Bay East and Green Bay West baseball teams haven't had much success in the WIAA tournament the past 15 years, and it stayed that way when the two became a co-op at the start of last season. East had gone 1-13 in tournament play since 2001, West 2-13 and the two combined 0-1. But the storyline has changed. The Devil Cats will be playing in a sectional semifinal against Green Bay Preble at 1 p. m. today at Green Bay Southwest. Perhaps it's also because the Devil Cats aren't surprised by it. "It's special, but it's one of those things we knew we were capable of from the beginning of the year," said senior first baseman Tyler Vandenhoogen, whose squad was given a No. 6... We didn't want to just be another one-and-done team. East/West had 14 players on its roster for most of the season, and although that doesn't provide much depth, the top-end talent has been impressive. Senior outfielder Noah Robinson, who had to sit out his junior season after transferring from West De Pere, was a first-team all-conference pick in the Fox River Classic Conference after hitting. He had five doubles, three triples and a home run to go along with eight stolen bases, nine RBIs and 14 runs scored. Watzka was a second-team pick as both an infielder and a pitcher, but it might be his work on the mound that has helped put East/West two wins away from state. Source: www.greenbaypressgazette.com
