Bay Port baseball among the elite in state - Green Bay Press Gazette
When the Bay Port baseball team beat Green Bay Preble in a WIAA Division 1 sectional championship last week , the win added to what the numbers already have shown: The Pirates are the crown jewel of area baseball programs. Bay Port will be making its 12th state appearance when it plays Oconomowoc in a quarterfinal at 1 p. m. on Tuesday at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. "I don't know about that," Bay Port coach Mike Simoens said when asked if his program is the area's best. Since the WIAA state tournament started in 1948, there have been 66 appearances made by 22 area schools. The Pirates have accounted for 18. 2 percent of those appearances, and their two state titles are tied with Oconto Falls for the most by any area team. Along with the titles Bay Port won in 2009 and 2010, it finished runner-up in 2012. There also are only five schools in the state which have more state appearances than Bay Port. They have set the bar really high," said Preble coach Andy Conard, who led Green Bay Notre Dame to state three times. The Pirates moved from the Bay Conference to the Fox River Classic Conference in 2007. Since that time they've had one of their players at least share the league's player of the year.
