This may seem like a peculiar choice for a head to head, but the Jaguar XJR and Chevrolet Impala SS of the Nineties represent an interesting time for both companies. In the UK, Jaguar was beginning to struggle in the face of rampant German rivals, while in the US Chevrolet was fighting against primarily Japanese challengers when it came to big four-door saloons. The Jaguar was an evolution of a design language that had been in place pretty much unchanged since the Sixties. As such the dynamic modernism exhibited by the Germans was already ripping away buyers – and the big cat's reputation for build quality maladies counted against it. But there was – and some might say there still is – a call for a... It has a wonderful blend of perfectly judged curves, combined with just a dash of chrome to make the Jaguar hide its bulk. The Chevrolet could never be described as subtly refined in the way the Jaguar might be. Nor does the Chevy hide its bulk particularly well. But then that's not really the point, is it. In SS form the Impala is transformed from an overly curvaceous blob (the Impala) to something a lot more sinister and purposeful. whereas the aristocratic Jaguar would have its people dispose of you, the Impala would do the damage itself.
