Infiniti Q60 Coupe Concept: Going for Baroque - Car and Driver (blog)

Infiniti’s new naming convention—every model designation now starts with Q—could be called boring (not to mention confusing), but no one is likely to make that same accusation at the brand’s styling. For proof, we offer the ornate Q60 coupe concept, which will ultimately become the production Q60 coupe once some of its baroque, show-car flourishes are stripped away. Infiniti is calling the Q60 concept “an original and bold reinterpretation of an elegant lifestyle 2+2 coupe. ” That reinterpretation stretches about an inch and a half longer and wider than the current Q60 coupe née G37 coupe, while dropping about an inch in height. What is likely to change—at least we hope—is some of the overwrought design work that leaves pretty much nothing unbent, un-chromed, or unadorned. The headlamps have the requisite aggressive scowl (and bitchin’ fiber-optic innards), but the upright, chrome-lipped grille with its silly center peak definitely reads more “elegant lifestyle” than knife-edged sports coupe. It’s not uncommon for concept cars to be over the top, but we wish the Q60 concept would have followed the advice of Coco Chanel by looking in the mirror and taking something off—jewelry, an accessory—before leaving the design studio.
