Why develop a pickup for the current platform of the Wrangler. A Wrangler pick-up makes a lot of sense. The Wrangler Unlimited proved to be very popular and I see those far more than 2 door variants now. Given Dodge/RAM doesn't offer a smaller pick-up like they used to with the Dakota, I think a Wrangler with a bed is a good offering, especially in light of Ford considering the return of the Ranger. Though you are right, the I4 Diesel they export in the Wrangler now needs to be certified for the US Wrangler (likely with a lot of changes for emissions. The workers have done "super human" work in keeping up with Wrangler demand and they deserve the recognition that this brings.
