This week in 1907, Prince Scipione Borghese and Ettore Guizzardi of Italy won the Peking-to-Paris race after driving like maniacs for 62 days across the bulk of Asia and Europe. Without any assistance and traversing countries where there were no roads, and therefore no road maps, this surely has to be the toughest motor race in history. The routes were also devised around the telegraph line of the time, allowing the accompanying journalist from each car to regularly send stories to newspapers throughout the race – probably while bruised, terrified, crying, covered in sand and... Various re-enactments have since taken place, including the Great Auto Race of 1908, responsible for spawning countless race-based slapsticks to decorate the silver screen. Sadder still, during the rest of the twentieth century re-enactments could no longer take place, due to the establishment of the USSR following the Russian Revolution.
