'I am so deeply sorry' says driver in 2013 crash that killed 5 in Riviera Beach - Sun Sentinel

Prosecutors Friday asked for Jabari Kemp to go to prison for 46 years and three months — the minimum sentence facing him — for convictions on five vehicular homicide charges from a 2013 Rivera Beach crash. But Kemp's lawyer asked for a considerable break: 15 years in prison plus 10 years of probation because the 23-year-old Miami-Dade man has shown remorse, the crimes were not intentional, and it was an isolated incident. After hearing two hours of testimony and legal arguments, Palm Beach County Circuit Judge John Kastrenakes said he needs "to think about this" and will pronounce Kemp's sentence at 1 p. m. Aug. During Kemp's trial about six weeks ago, he testified he suddenly blacked out behind the wheel and wasn't in control of his two-door 2008 Mercedes CLK350 when he got off Interstate 95 northbound at Blue Heron Boulevard. They argued that Kemp, then 21, drove recklessly at 128 mph and ran a red light at the bottom of the ramp, and was awake when he T-boned a 1994 Lexus ES330 heading eastbound on Blue Heron. Killed on April 13, 2013, were the Lexus driver, Jason Mahlung, 21. and passengers Makita Campbell, 14. Shonteria Grimsley and Christina Oliver-Joseph, both 17. and Orane Cummings, 22. All were friends from Riviera Beach. On Friday, Kemp said nothing more about being unconscious. "This life-altering event has left a gaping hole in my heart," Kemp said, reading from a prepared statement. Source: www.sun-sentinel.com
