Former Furman head football coach Bobby Johnson, an Isle of Palms resident and former Clemson football player and assistant coach, has been chosen to replace Archie Manning as the 13th College Football Playoff selection committee member. Johnson started every game for Clemson three straight years, as a wide receiver in 1970 and a cornerback in 1971-72. “I have tremendous respect for the selection committee and I am honored to join the group,” Johnson said in a statement. Johnson, 64, served as a longtime Furman assistant, before a one-year stint (1993) as Clemson’s defensive coordinator. Johnson became Furman’s head coach from 1994-2001, compiling a 60-36 record and was named the American Football Coaches Association’s National Coach of the Year in 2001. He led Vanderbilt from 2002-09, winning 29 games in eight years. He was named SEC Coach of the Year after the 2008 Music City Bowl, the Commodores’ first bowl victory in 53 years. Johnson replaces Manning, who had to step down from the committee in October with back and knee problems. “I was honored when I was chosen to be on the College Football Playoff Selection Committee,” Manning said in a statement.
