Holocaust survivor indicted in fatal hit-and-run - Asbury Park Press
An 84-year-old former Howell man and Holocaust survivor was charged in the 2014 hit-and-run death of a 58-year-old Spring Lake bicyclist. Investigators determined Charles McHugh was riding his bicycle on Herbetsville Road in Howell when he was hit from behind by a 1995 black Lexus LS 400 sedan driven by Chapnick. In 2013, Chapnick told Howell Memorial Middle School students about an adolescence spent hiding from the Nazis for 2½ years before becoming a prisoner in the Buchenwald concentration camp when he was 11 years old. If convicted of knowingly leaving the scene, Chapnick faces a sentence of five to 10 years in a state prison. Source: www.app.com
