Nürburgring Speed Limits Killing Hunts For Lap Record - Yahoo Autos (blog)

Today, the final Porsche 918 Spyder supercar rolled off the assembly line in Germany, an event Porsche marked by noting that the Spyder still held the record for a street-legal vehicle on the Nürburgring, which it lapped in September 2013 in 6... Following that wreck, the track’s overseers and German racing officials instituted speed limits of 124 mph and 155 mph in a couple of sections where vehicles could go flying. You don’t have to be a racer to think speed limits on a track sound unusual — especially at a track so famed for testing drivers and machines to their limits and beyond — and the drivers who ran a race there last month agree. While you can still run a race with speed limits, setting lap records requires going as fast as possible. Musial, the video mastermind behind the Drive channel on YouTube and a documentary on Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg, revealed that Koenigsegg was ready to assault Porsche’s Nürburging record with the 1,341-hp One:1 supercar. Koenigsegg believes his car could beat the 918 by more than 10 seconds — but to do so would require hitting 186 mph in a 124-mph zone. And the track’s owners say the speed limits stand whether there’s 40 cars racing to a crowd or one vehicle from a manufacturer who’s rented the entire loop. Source: www.yahoo.com
