That makes Bono the richest pop star in the world, dwarfing the wealth of Sir Paul McCartney, who has £730million and Madonna lagging behind with £520million. When he is not making hits Bono is an astute businessman, notably as a founder of Elevation Partners, a private equity firm which puts up cash in the hope of spectacular returns. It is a risky business but for Bono, whose real name is Paul Hewson, it has paid off in spades. It is six years since Bono's firm bought a 2. 3 per cent share in Facebook for £56million, at a time when founder Mark Zuckerberg was trying to raise funds, three years before he floated the company. The name Bono, meanwhile, came from a shortened version of the Latin words Bono Vox, meaning good voice, which began as a joke but stuck. Soon the band, featuring Bono on vocals and guitar, Adam Clayton on bass, Larry Mullins on drums and Dave "The Edge" Evans on guitar, was being noticed around Dublin and a record deal followed.
