The overall fuel economy leader is still the Toyota Prius, rated at 48 mpg in the city and 45 on the highway. The smart car, which arrived in the United States last January too late for the 2008 guide now holds down the No. 5 overall MPG spot with ratings of 33 mpg city and 41 mpg highway. The Jetta TDI Diesel Sedan and Jetta Sportswagen TDI Diesel Wagon with manual transmissions are listed in seventh place overall with ratings of 30 mpg city and 41 mpg highway.
