Brian Berry spent two years fighting both fires and writer’s block as he accomplished a lifelong dream of publishing his own book. Though the 40-year-old firefighter says writing “100 Years: A History of the Casa Grande Fire Department” was his passion project, he says the true motivation was to give something tangible back to the community. Just days after the great fire of 1914, plans were already underway to build the city back up. Much like the men and women Berry researched, his story is marked by the courage to start anew. After five years of teaching elementary school in Arizona, Berry decided it was time for a change. At age 32, when most family men resolve a forthcoming mid-life crisis with shiny sports cars or expensive exercise equipment, Berry instead changed careers. “Every day you go to work,” Berry said, “you don’t know what’s going to happen.
