Mazda might of made their previous 2. 3L (which was in Mazda 3, 6 & Ford Mondeo / Escape) into a Sky Active engine, so lightweight, high compression & direct injection, that would certainly lift torque and power, but you have to also remember... Mazda are als not fans of turbo petrol technology and the North American market love V6 engines, maybe Mazda will take the smaller 3. 5L Ford V6 which has been updated to direct injection and other goodies like more advanced VCT and also... true however they still have technical alliance to use what ever is on offer on each side, a perfect example of that is rear suspension design, the mulit-link centre connecting point swing arms are the same design, Ford call it “Control Blade”... The only other range of engine they have is their older V6 design (which dates back to 929) and I doubt Mazda in the time frame would of had enough time to redevelop that engine. The non-turbo 2. 3 litre four in the 3, 6, Mondeo etc was replaced by the 2. 5 litre four in the last generation 6, 3 SP25, etc, and has been replaced by the current Skyactiv 2. 5, again in 6, 3 SP25 and CX-5.
