Ever since his dot com went public, your neighbor Sedgwick has been totally in your face with his newfound lucre. His underground auto humidor also includes a glistening example of Mercedes-Benz's two-seat exoticar, the SLR McLaren , but now he's selling that. "I'm getting the new limited-edition version," Sedgwick explains. " Yes, keeping up with the Sedgwicks of the world is about to become even more maddening, courtesy of the new, extra-potent SLR McLaren 722 Edition. Only 150 will be built ( Mercedes has sold just over 1100 "standard" SLRs since the car's debut in 2004), and only 20 or 30 of those will come to the U. S. -at a price of around $480,000 each. Don't even bother taking out a third mortgage on your house to get a 722 of your own, either: All 150 cars, Mercedes says, have already been spoken for. it's just hitting the streets, but already the SLR 722 is something of a museum piece-nice to look at, but you're never going to own one. What's more, after a brief drive in and around the mushrooming Middle Eastern metropolis of Dubai (where the skyline-fed by roughly 18 percent of the world's supply of high-rise cranes-is going up as fast as the SLR's gullwing doors), we have... Officially, the SLR 722 Edition is an homage to the Mercedes-Benz 300SLR that carried British Grand Prix driver Stirling Moss and journalist/navigator Denis Jenkinson to victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia road race.
