Nostalgia: In search of the 'missing Mini' Moke - Daily Post North Wales
The re-born Mini (or MINI as it is now rendered) has been a soaring success for its maker, BMW. The last of those names harks back to the Mini of yore, but there is one model from the first line-up that has yet to figure in a new guise … the pared-down, Jeep-like Moke, with its classic utilitarian ragtop styling. So, we go in search of the ‘missing MINI’. The Moke achieved success as a cult car on the trendier streets of London and as a beach buggy, a big hit in such places as Portugal’s Algarve, Seychelles, coastal Australia, California and resorts in the Caribbean. It was built at BMC's Longbridge, Birmingham, plant from 1964 to 1968. The car was also made in Australia and in Portugal, where production ended in 1993. A Chinese-made version of the little car, which is close in style and bears the name Moke... In 2009, MINI revealed the Beachcomber concept, which displayed a take on Moke styling, while being packed with modern equipment. The concept car’s pillar-less body and lack of doors and roof were obviously Moke-inspired. Source: www.dailypost.co.uk
