RPD: Car going 75 mph at time of fatal accident - Richmond

, was driving 25 mph above the posted speed limit when his Chrysler Concorde LXI struck the driver's side of a Mitsubishi Diamante driven by Kevin M. Spurgin Jr. , 31, according to Lt. Donnie Benedict, supervisor of the traffic division. Spurgin was killed by the impact, which pushed the driver's side doors onto the passenger's side of the Mitsubishi. Benedict said a computerized momentum analysis determined the speed Dishmon was driving. The investigation revealed Spurgin was headed south on Gravel Pit Road across the westbound lanes of U. S. 40 at about 6 a. m. when the Mitsubishi was struck by the Chrysler, which was traveling in the left westbound lane. Spurgin's failure to yield the right-of-way to Dishmon is listed in RPD's accident report as the primary cause of the incident. Dishmon's speed and Dishmon's being distracted are listed as secondary causes. Dishmon was driving with a suspended driver's license at the time of the accident, and a blood test at Reid Hospital after the incident revealed the presence of illegal substances in Dishmon's blood stream.
