Molenaar killed Senior Constable Len Snee and seriously injured Senior Constables Bruce Miller and Grant Diver. In the wake of the 50-hour siege, which saw extraordinary acts of bravery by Napier police and civilians, Kalff received a commendation from the then Commissioner of Police, Peter Marshall. In his citation Marshall said Kalff demonstrated outstanding leadership in quickly establishing control and coordination of staffing and resources from the Napier Police Station. "Inspector Kalff's actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the New Zealand Police," Marshall wrote. Kalff was raised on a Woodlands Road, Opotiki dairy farm in the Bay of Plenty.
