3-year-old killed in overnight crash on I-10 - KATC Lafayette News

Investigators said they believe the right rear tire deflated on a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder, causing the vehicle to travel into the center median and roll over. Two unrestrained rear seat passengers, 36-year-old Luis Amilcar Trochez-Ramos of New Orleans and 3-year-old Marbella Funez of Houston, were ejected from the vehicle and died as a result of their injuries. The driver, 27-year-old Cintia Funez of Houston, was flown to a Lafayette hospital with moderate injuries. The front seat passenger, 29-year-old Heidy Brizuela of Houston, received minor injuries. Louisiana law requires vehicle occupants to be properly restrained in all seating positions, day and night. Wearing a seat belt on every trip, whether it's short or long, is the most effective thing motorists can do to protect themselves in the event of a crash. Motorists are strongly encouraged to wear a seat belt and to ensure children are properly restrained. Grand Coteau Mayor Shaterral Johnson said her family's life was torn apart with the death of her sister Shameka Johnson. He is charged with first-degree murder of a police officer, first-degree murder and five counts of attempted first-degree murder. Source: www.katc.com
