Now the skipper of the Triple-A affiliate of the Florida Marlins, Haines was the catcher at Eastern Illinois and playing in both 1999 and 2000 against the Blue Raiders, who were once fellow members with EIU in the Ohio Valley Conference. “I could tell that baseball was really important at MTSU,” Haines said earlier this week before bringing his Zephyrs to Nashville Friday to start a four-game series against the Sounds. And coach ‘Pete’ and assistant coach Jim McGuire (now MTSU’s head coach) were so professional and did things with such class. After graduating and spending two years as an assistant at Olney (Illinois) Central College, he was hired by Peterson as a graduate assistant in 2002 at the strong urging of his former coach, who just so happened to be a Peterson confidante. “I applied for the job,” Haines said, “and we had some mutual friends through the coaching grapevine. The three years Haines worked as a graduate assistant for the Blue Raiders also included teaching classes and studying for a graduate degree along with all the coaching, especially working with the team’s catchers.
