Prosecutors: Woman embezzled $100K from disabled father - Standard-Examiner

FARMINGTON — A woman is accused of embezzling more than $100,000 from her father’s special-needs trust account and is now charged with five felonies. She is charged with two counts of exploitation of a vulnerable adult, two counts of unlawful dealing with property by fiduciary and one count of communications fraud, all second-degree felonies. According to court documents, Johnson’s father, Pablo Marin, suffered from dementia and lived at a nursing home in Bountiful from April 2013 until his death in December 2014. His medical and long-term care was paid for through Utah’s Medicaid... In February 2008, Marin fell in the nursing home and broke his hip, according to the documents. The funds were to be used “for the sole benefit” of Marin, and third-party expenses were to be paid only for providing care for Marin, according to court documents. Prosecutors said in charging documents that an investigation revealed that Johnson spent about $40,000 on a Nissan Armada in 2013, which she used as collateral to secure a loan of more than $25,000 at a credit union. She also used more than $5,000 for airfare for herself and family members for a vacation in Hawaii and spent $10,300 of her father’s funds on “personal expenses while on vacation,” according to the documents. State officials in February 2014 asked for an accounting from Johnson about spending from the account. Source: www.standard.net
