Porsche Boxster fire closes US Highway 101 - Tillamook County Pioneer

– Tillamook Fire District firefighters extinguished a car fire early this afternoon, Wednesday, May 6, before it could cause any further damage. A Pacific City man was driving his 2001 Porsche Boxster northbound on U. S. Highway 101 to a repair shop in Beaverton when he “heard something pop or break loose in the engine compartment,” said Tillamook Fire Marshal Rueben Descloux. The car, parked off the highway south of Tillamook about a quarter mile south of Christensen Taxidermy and a few miles north of Pleasant Valley RV Park, soon burst into flames. “We put two hoses on it because Porsche’s engines are often made of magnesium, which can lead to a bad fire,” said Descloux. “Magnesium can burn at thousands of degrees and water can essentially burn at those temperatures. Magnesium fires can react violently with water. For safety’s sake, TFD blocked the highway in both directions for about 10 minutes while firefighters worked, said Descloux.
