George H.W. Bush hospitalized after fall - Chron.com

Former President George H. W. Bush was "up and talking and out of bed" at a Maine hospital, a doctor said Thursday, a day after the nation's 41st president fell and fractured a bone in his neck while at the family's summer home in Kennebunkport. Doctors said the injury will likely take three to four months to heal. Bush, 91, fell Wednesday and was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where his condition was later listed as fair. Family spokesman Jim McGrath said Bush was "fine" but will need to spend some time in a neck brace. "President Bush will remain at Maine Medical Center to be fitted for a brace to immobilize the injured area, to continue physical therapy, and for further evaluation," McGrath said. The spokesman said Bush's recovery period is not expected to be prolonged. William D'Angelo, a neurosurgeon who is treating Bush there, said the former president was lucky the fracture wasn't more serious. As his wife said, it takes a lot more than this to knock his spirits down. Bush is being treated at the state's largest medical facility, where a children's hospital is named for his wife Barbara. A hospital spokesman said it was premature to speculate about when Bush will be. Source: www.chron.com
