Five people were injured Monday evening in Oceanside when a car crossed into oncoming traffic and hit another car head-on, then struck another vehicle, police said. Ignacio Lopez said a man driving a 2003 Chevrolet Impala westbound on Oceanside Boulevard in the simulated median crossed the double-yellow lines, hitting an eastbound Mazda3 head-on. The man was extricated by firefighters and flown to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla. A man who was his passenger was transported by ambulance to Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside with complaints of pain. He was also flown to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, and was in critical condition with major head trauma, a broken arm and a broken leg, Lopez said. A woman who was his passenger, who had been unconscious when firefighters arrived, was taken to the same hospital by ambulance. After the initial crash, an eastbound 1993 Toyota pickup was struck by the Impala, Lopez said. A woman driving the pickup was transported by ambulance to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.
