Colbert man charged with burglarizing chicken house in Jackson County - Online Athens
A 41-year-old Colbert man remained in jail Tuesday without bond following his arrest Monday on charges of burglarizing a chicken house in Jackson County. John Richard Vaughter was charged with entering a chicken house at the Porterfield Chicken Farm on Wages Road and possession of methamphetamine, according to a Jackson County Sheriff’s report. Deputies said two men returned to the farm shortly after 3 a. m. to look for a pistol one believed he left at the location, but upon their return they discovered someone was in the chicken house and scattered various items on the ground. A responding deputy located a 1989 Chevrolet Silverado parked down the road just out of sight fr. om the farm. Deputies patrolling the area located Vaughter walking on U. S. Highway 441. Upon being questioned, Vaughter claimed to have found a laptop in the woods, deputies said. A search of his clothing revealed some meth, bullets, and a piece of paper with handwritten directions to the chicken farm from Athens, deputies said. Officer contacted the owner of the Chevy truck and he told deputies he had loaned the vehicle to Vaughter.
